Introduction
The South Canterbury Design Code will help guide the look and feel of its streets, green spaces and community spaces.
As a new part of the city that will, in time, link seamlessly to Canterbury, we know how important it is for it to draw upon Canterbury's history, landscape and character: those things that don't always come across in reports or drawings.
That's why, as we develop the Code, we are so keen to hear your views on what you love and value about Canterbury and how you would like to see this reflected in South Canterbury.

What is a Design Code?
A Design Code is a compilation of simple, concise, written and illustrative design parameters. Together, they form a framework to inform the character, quality and identity of a new place.
It does not dictate how a specific building should look, but sets out the principles that every home, street, green space and public area should follow.
It allows buildings, streets and spaces to have their own character, while ensuring they look and feel like part of the same place. It also means that plans can be submitted for council approval well before the first homes are built.
South Canterbury's Design Code develops the approved framework plans set within the Outline Planning Application. It will cover areas including:
- How buildings work alongside streets and green spaces
- The building shapes, heights and materials that work within the approved parameters
- The width and feel of different types of streets
- How parking is arranged
- The character of public open spaces and different types of play areas
- Spaces for sport, play and active recreation
- Flora, fauna and green habitats
- How the new place connects with the existing city by foot and bike

The Process: Please note that the Design Code will need to be approved by Canterbury City Council. Detailed applications at South Canterbury will then need to comply with the principles established in the Code.
