Why Developers Often Lose Public Trust
Too often, new developments leave local people feeling unheard. The reasons are familiar:
- "Developers say all the right things before planning consent is granted, then go quiet—except for the noise of construction."
- "Public consultations happen, but community input seems to disappear when real decisions are made."
- "Developers build what they think will sell, rather than what will work best for local people."
We understand these frustrations, and we are committed to doing things differently at South Canterbury.
A Better Approach for South Canterbury
South Canterbury is about more than just homes—it’s about creating a well-connected, thriving neighbourhood that complements the existing area. Our approach ensures we don’t just build, but carefully shape a place that enhances local life.
Crucially, consultation doesn’t stop once planning permission is secured. Some of the most important decisions happen later:
- Should new streets reflect Canterbury’s historical figures or its natural environment?
- Should sports facilities focus on rugby, cricket, or something else entirely?
- Would a farm shop or a café better serve local residents?
These details matter, and they should be shaped by local voices—not just by developers.
Introducing the South Canterbury Community Panel
To ensure ongoing engagement, we are launching the Community Panel. Inspired by the demos of ancient Athenian democracy, this group will bring together local residents to provide meaningful input on key decisions.
The Panel is not political. It will be made up of volunteers from the local area, representing a broad range of perspectives. Meeting quarterly, members will provide feedback, discuss plans, and raise concerns. Our role is to listen, engage, and adapt as needed.
The Panel will have up to 20 members, ensuring a diverse and engaged group. To maintain consistency, members will serve for several years, with opportunities for new participants to join over time.
A Long-Term Commitment to Community Involvement
This is not just a one-time consultation. Alongside the Community Panel, we will continue to run surveys, research, and engagement activities to ensure that South Canterbury develops in a way that genuinely benefits local people.
We are also introducing a Youth Panel to ensure younger voices help shape the future of the community.
This is about creating a place with the people of Canterbury, not just for them. If you’d like to get involved, stay informed, or share your thoughts, please click here:
